What is the Illumina LED Retrofit System?

Fujifilm Illumina is a two part system consisting of an LED curing unit and specially formulated LED inks that easily convert existing waterbase or UV flexo presses to boost productivity and reduce cost.

The unique Cold Cure technology of Illumina, unlike conventional LED solutions, provides higher dosage at much lower temperatures while reducing utility energy cost by 86% to 95%.

How Illumina Works

UV-LED flexo printing uses light-emitting diodes to convert electrical current into light without producing equipment-damaging and potential health-compromising ozone emissions. Gone are the heat, odor and disposal worries often associate with traditional UV flexo presses, UV ink and mercury curing bulbs.

The UV energy emitted at Illumina’s 20% power setting is the same as the 100% power setting of other UV-LED curing systems. Patented LED technology delivers up to 44% more energy toward the substrate, resulting in faster curing and incredible productivity and cost-saving benefits.

How Illumina UV-LED Drives Down Costs

Illumina UV-LED COLDCURE is an instant on/off process. This process fundamentally lowers the energy usage and stress on lamp bulbs experienced in conventional “always-on” UV mercury lamp curing. Illumina UV-LED also eliminates may of the costs generated by cooling air blowers, ozone extraction and heat makeup systems.

A typical Illumina retrofit takes less than 1 day followed by ink and substrate testing. By the second day, you’ll be in full UV-LED production mode. The Illumina LED System sets a new standard for flexo printing speed on standard paper and film stock, so you can make up for the limited downtime in almost no time at all.

Fujifilm’s 300 Series flexo and rotary screen inks were developed in conjunction with the Illumina COLDCURE system to optimize the performance of the system. A full range of inks including adhesives, coatings, expanded gamut process colors, fluorescents, metallics and extended life pigment inks are available.

By knowing that the inks will work seamlessly with the The Illumina LED System, printers can experience low risk and easy conversion to UV-LED. Fujifilm is the only LED system AND ink package provider in the industry.

300 Series UV flexo inks are designed for use with all common flexo substrates. Fujifilm 300 Series inks offer the ability to cure under either traditional UV or LED lights with the same ink. The 300 Series offers superb dot reproduction, maintain crisp print definition, sharp copy and clean reverses without the gain typical of water or solvent based flexo inks.

Illumina’s  higher efficiency, combined with a patented heat dissipation system, dramatically reduces chip degradation over time. The result is a lamp life expectancy that is more than 20 times that of traditional UV mercury lamps.  And when you do need to replace a module, you can replace  individual modules instead of the entire unit.

The Innovation Behind Illumina

Illumina’s single-piece extrusion design allows large cooling water channels to be located directly behind each LED module. This lengthens cooling time from several seconds to several minutes if the chill-drums stop rolling. The patented designs also produce less heat than competitive LED technologies and overall heat dissipation is much more effective. The small number of insulating layers used and a unique domed lens enables cooling with room temperature distilled water. This eliminates condensation issues as well as increases the lifetime of the water circulation system.
